As you can see from the price chart, the Microsoft share price has risen substantially and its increases correspond with different events including business line expansion, stock splits and dividend policy which have shaped the growth of the company.

Those early to invest in Microsoft stock benefitted greatly from the tech boom that started in the 1980s through the 2000s. As growth slowed during the tech bust in 2000-2002 the company leaned on its core business units of supplying operating systems software and its Office suite of programs. The company began to issue dividends in 2003 in recognition of the period of slower growth in an effort to appease shareholders. Beginning in 2013 the company entered another growth phase powered by strategic acquisitions. Two of the largest and most well known acquisitions were LinkedIn for $26.2bn in 2016 and Skype Technologies for $8.5bn in 2011. These acquisitions coupled with strategic partnerships have helped to reinvent the company and continue to push it forward.
